Glacier National Park Hiking Vacation

“The main thing is the whole thing. Which is why it seems to me that although Glacier lacks a logo-like defining attraction, it perhaps better than any other place defines the general purpose and value of our National Park System…a monument to the underlying forces of nature, not to the unusual features of it.”

Life Magazine

Come explore one of the premier national parks in the U.S.! Glacier National Park, located in dynamic northern Montana. Your days are devoted to gentle or challenging hikes that reveal inspiring beauty, picture taking along scenic drives, time to venture out on your own, and even a fun half-day river rafting excursion. At night, you’ll lay your head down and rejuvenate in a comfortable national park lodge.

Your discovery of “Glacier Country” commences with a beautiful wildflower-filled hike up (and back down, unless you choose to ride the chairlift) Big Mountain, outside the cute town of Whitefish.  After a peaceful night’s rest, you’ll enjoy a thrilling morning of river rafting on the Flathead River that exposes you to the brilliant backcountry of Glacier National Park.  In the afternoon, our hike follows a rushing river that rewards you with views of an amazing alpine lake surrounded by mountains.

Next, you’ll take part in a scenic drive higher into the Rocky Mountains along the famous Going to the Sun road. Have your camera ready, because scenic shots abound. Once you arrive, the choice of hiking routes allows you to hike the distance you desire.

A ‘hiker’s choice” day near Many Glacier is up next; offering you the flexibility to take part in a multitude of hiking options in the Grinnell Glacier area. Whatever you choose will be wonderful as the entire Many Glacier area is magnificent. You can also opt to rent canoes or kayaks and paddle on Swiftcurrent Lake.

On your final day you’ll head back to the Kalispell Airport; but not before you make a stop for a short hike along the way!

You’ll be glad to know that we define “hiking” as daylong walks in mountainous areas. You do not need to carry more than a daypack with water, snacks, and extra clothes. You will have a Montana Vacation Company guide on this five-day exploration of Glacier National Park plus, on two separate days, professional Glacier Park mountain guides. These local guides are extremely knowledgeable about the area’s flora, fauna, and geography. You can plan on catching sight of wildflowers, big horned sheep, mountain goats, and perhaps even a grizzly bear.

When To Travel

In general, Montana's best outdoors weather for summer sports is from May to October. However, on this tour we are limited because the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park is usually only open from early July through the third Monday in October. Given it can easily snow in the park in October, the best months for this tour are July, August, and September with the fewest crowds being after Labor Day. However, if you are looking to avoid the crowds and can be flexible in our Glacier itinerary, the months of May, June, and early October can be excellent too.

Changes to Your Itinerary

While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience. If there is any one experience that is going to make or break your trip, please discuss this with us in advance! We will attempt to keep our website itinerary as current as possible and communicate any major changes with you in the weeks prior to the tour.
